Whakahoro has a very colourful history, both Maori and European. Many remnants of the first failed attempts to farm this land remain. These old buildings, bridges and roads are being preserved as they tell a very important story of New Zealand's past.
Stan's Whare is a great lunch spot while doing a one day tramp, or an overnight spot for longer walks. You can't help but soak up the mystery and magic of this place.
This hardwood bridge above the impressive Kaiwhakauka waterfalls was an important link for the pioneers on the road to the bridge to nowhere.
Supplies where brought in from the riverboats by packhorses for the early settlers to collect from the Depot. It was also a social gathering place where many cases of Whiskey were shared.
